Abstract

Objectives: Communication breakup is i of the main causes of adverse events in clinical routine, particularly in handover situations. The communication tool SBAR (state of affairs, background, assessment and recommendation) was developed to increment handover quality and is widely causeless to increase patient safety. The objective of this review is to summarise the touch on of the implementation of SBAR on patient condom.

Design: A systematic review of manufactures published on SBAR was performed in PUBMED, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO in January 2017. All original research manufactures on SBAR fulfilling the post-obit eligibility criteria were included: (one) SBAR was implemented into clinical routine, (two) the investigation of SBAR was the chief objective and (3) at to the lowest degree ane patient upshot was reported.

Setting: A wide range of settings inside primary and secondary care and nursing homes.

Participants: A variety of heath professionals including nurses and physicians.

Main and secondary consequence measures: Aspects of patient safe (patient outcomes) defined every bit the occurrence or incidence of adverse events.

Results: Eight studies with a before-afterward design and iii controlled clinical trials performed in different clinical settings met the inclusion criteria. The objectives of the studies were to ameliorate team communication, patient hand-offs and communication in phone calls from nurses to physicians. The studies were heterogeneous with regard to study characteristics, peculiarly patient outcomes. In total, 26 different patient outcomes were measured, of which eight were reported to be significantly improved. Eleven were described every bit improved but no farther statistical tests were reported, and 6 outcomes did not change significantly. Only i study reported a descriptive reduction in patient outcomes.

Conclusions: This review found moderate show for improved patient prophylactic through SBAR implementation, especially when used to construction advice over the phone. However, at that place is a lack of loftier-quality research on this widely used advice tool.

Trial registration: none.

Keywords: SBAR; adverse event; hand-off state of affairs; interprofessional communication; patient safety.
